Why "Grow and Flow?"

We all "GROW " and as Camilla works primarily with children and young people, growing is in their genes!  Of course, even as adults we are always being changed by our life experiences and these promote  growth even when it may be uncomfortable.

"Grow" we are all familiar with.. but what about "FLOW"?

All of us can experience "FLOW"  but children more readily enter through play  the "flow" state which is defined as being "completely immersed in the activity, lose track of time, and are not easily distracted".

It is "mindful occupation" you could say but this doesn't truly convey the wonderful feeling and benefits that being in a flow state creates.

Occupational Therapy can assist  your child to improve performance in activities they want or need to do.  This is what the "occupation" in occupational  therapy means.

It doesn't just mean a 9-5 job or "occupation"!

This can range from the essentials in self-care to your child's specific  goals:

  • skills for self-care: e.g. increasing  independence in toileting,  bathing, dressing or eating a variety of foods and using cutlery

  • skills for  self-management:  e.g. learning about their emotions and how to understand and manage them in an age-appropriate manner; developing resilience to persist with tasks when they are challenging

  • skills for learning:e.g. learning to write, access a computer for schoolwork, to organise their belongings at home and school, to schedule homework tasks and plan for assignments and to manage their environment both physical and sensory to optimise attention and focus in the classroom

  • skills for play:  e.g learning how to be able to join in a game with other children, to take turns, to play independently and with others

OT  to provide parent coaching in strategies and techniques to support your child in:

  • daily routines such as sleeping, eating, toileting and dressing

  • techniques to teach or improve handwriting, fine motor, organisation, play and social communication skill development

  • social-emotional skill development using tools such as the Zones of Regulation and understanding behavioural challenges

  • equipment recommendations for participation in daily routines such as toileting, showering, dressing and  sleeping
